Accelerating progress in writing through a focus on teaching strong foundational skills (YR1)

This session will support teachers to improve standards in writing through the:

•Clarification of age-appropriate end-of-year foundational skills in writing expectations
•Review of a collection of ARE writing to identify application of foundational skills
•Exploration of appropriate writing purposes and outcomes for each year group that are well-matched to the teaching and learning of age-appropriate foundational skills.

For EYFS teachers, this session will also include a diagnostic assessment focus to identify where there are strengths and gaps in pupils’ foundations for writing and to determine next steps for planning and teaching in writing to maximise progress.
This is aimed at teachers who would like to secure their subject knowledge including those new to year group, the city or new to teaching (apart from Reception, this is a revision of training offered in 2025).
